How to prepare to nurse your baby…

If you are planning on nursing your baby it is important to educate yourself as much as possible.

Nursing your baby is natural but it doesn’t always come naturally, it is something that is learned. Here are some ways that you can prepare:

  1. Read a good book! I recommend:

    • The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding from La Leche League

    • Breastfeeding Made Simple by Nancy Mohrbacher and Kathleen Kendall-Tackett

    • Why Breastfeeding Matters by Charlotte Young (this is not a “how-to” book though)

  2. Take a prenatal lactation class, you can book mine here

  3. Attend lactation specific support group meetings (you can find when my next one is by heading to my events tab)

  4. Figure out which of your family and friends will be a good support person, specifically ones that have been successful with nursing their own babies

  5. Look for your local lactation specialists so if you do need support you know who to go to

  6. Ask your doctors, nurses, and midwives about how they support breast(chest)-feeding

  7. Find a hospital that is supportive, such as a Baby-Friendly Hospital. You can find one near you here
